Product Proposition
KING living currently offers a limited home office range. This range consists of two desks, the Eto desk is one offering. To update this range Tom Fereday has proposed a new ETO desk. This project is a complete re-design of the ETO desk, starting from the ground up to design and develop something completely new and unique.
@Mina Bassilious (Unlicensed) & @Jordan Ruchalski (Unlicensed) will be focusing on the integration of the complete desk eco system. To achieve this all accessories have to be designed and developed to be incorporated within this range. The desk will be electrified with integrated wireless charging, sleek cable management and storage to keep the user inspired and productive.
The product will include the following, with all powered devices wirelessly powered.
Desk
Task Light
Table Lamp
Cable Management
Monitor Stand
Tray
Laptop stand
Range Gap
KING living has a very limited range of ‘Home Office’ products. The new ETO desk will ensure the limited range of desks will continue to be a modern offering for our customers. In the greater market, there is a lack of completely integrated desks especially with the unique ability to wirelessly charge and power accessories.
Requirements for Success
What is the target requirements to make this a successful project?
Requirements |
---|
Wirelessly charge and power accessories |
Minimize visible cables |
Suite of wireless and functional accessories: Task Light, Table Lamp, Cable Management, Monitor Stand, Tray, Laptop stand |
Timber tabletop and accessories |
Aluminium legs and frame |
Hidden drawer |
Key Risks & Considerations
What are the key risks involved in the project?
e.g. manufacturing risks, design complications, bottlenecks in the timeline, commercialization risks, brand discrepancies
Key Risks | Mitigation plan (Concept refinement phase) |
---|---|
External Designer, slow down design and development phase, pleasing all parties | Only commiting to a production and release timeline when the external designer has approved the final geometry. |
Electrical compliance | Following Apple guidelines for integration of MagSafe chargers. Utilising exisiting electrical components and assemblies where possible. This will allow us to certify the desk as an assembly of certified components rather than a unique electrical setup that needs to be certified from scratch. |
3rd party Suppliers, managing quality, timelines and supply | Prototyping and testing component designs in-house to be confident in what we are making. Sharing documentation for the components with suppliers early to allow a few months of sampling and development for production. |
The proposed lighting product designs are complex and require signficant R&D | Decided that the launch of the desk will not be held up by complications with the lighting accessories. They can be launched at a later date if they will signigicantly delay the desk release. |

Sustainability
This desk is predominately made from natural materials. The timber top not only offers a long-lasting work surface it is also biodegradable when it is no longer fit for use. The Aluminium frame will last for decades, and can be recyled at the end of the product life. All the electrical components are modular and upgradeable as technology improves; meaning only the necessary parts will be replaced rather than the entire product.
